Virgin Media Launches! February 1
Entrepreneur and founder of Virgin Group Sir Richard Branson has announced the launch of a new, innovative communications and entertainment platform.
Virgin Media, which was formed after the merger between NTL: Telewest and Virgin’s mobile service, will be the first UK operator to offer a “quad play” of TV, broadband, fixed-line and mobile phone services.
“Today’s creation of Virgin Media sees a milestone in the history of the media industry and cable in particular. For the first time there is a single brand set to provide a more extensive range of television entertainment, broadband and communication services than previously offered by anyone in the UK,” said Sir Richard.
“Our transition to Virgin Media has been underway since last July and will continue over the coming months as we roll out an outstanding 21st century customer experience in home entertainment and communications.”
Virgin Media is also set to introduce a new TV channel, Virgin Central, on February 20th.
While only 12.5 million homes in the UK will be able to receive the full Virgin Media range, plans are afoot to extend the quad play service to the whole country by the end of 2007.
Jim Mooney, the new Virgin Media chairman, planned to expose industry leader BSkyB’s “soft underbelly” by offering an “a la carte” service as opposed to the more constrictive package option available from Sky
