BBC and Google set for Video Deal

The BBC is in discussions with Google about the possibility of promoting and selling its programmes on the influential YouTube website, which was acquired by the search engine firm late last year.

While the BBC would not comment specifically on any deal, the Telegraph reports a spokesman as saying that talks are underway with a view to the corporation showing programmes on YouTube – whose popularity has soared as users post their own clips and compilations on the site – and other video sharing sites run by Google.

Google Video, which was rolled out across Europe in eight different versions last July and includes content from providers such as ITN, will thus be another target for the BBC as it bids to promote its output worldwide – with the US version of particular interest to the broadcaster.

The US broadcaster CBS has a similar agreement with YouTube – with The Late Show, one of it’s flagship programmes, having seen a 200,000 rise in viewing figures after clips were posted on the website.

Reports suggest that the deal could be confirmed as early as next Wednesday, when Google chief executive Eric Schmidt attends the World Economic Forum in Davos.
