Return of the Million Dollar Page December 5
Entrepreneurs often start their careers young, but many won’t get the break they’re seeking until they are well into their professional life. Indeed, many entrepreneurs do not have the experience or contacts to successfully strike out on their own until they have been working for a concerted period of time.
However, that has not been the experience of 22-year-old student Alex Tew. The US student became known around the world last year when he successfully launched his first venture - the Million Dollar Homepage.
The simple idea, which was to sell small pieces of his website as advertising space until the whole site was covered - and he had made $1 million - was not only hugely successful, but it also made Mr Tew a well-known name and his website became an internet phenomenon. It was the simplicity of the idea which impressed many people in the business world and the student’s entrepreneurial instincts will have caused many people in the business world sit up and take note as the website took off.
However, Mr Tew is not someone who appears keen to be snapped up by the first businessman to knock at his door and seems determined to continue making money his own way, by finding gaps in the market and making a beeline for them.
Having given up his degree in business after just one year - not surprising given that, in that time, he had set up the Million Dollar Homepage and seen it reach the $1 million mark after just four months Mr Tew is now looking at his next big entrepreneurial project.
He has launched Pixelotto, in a move which could make him $1 million every few months, as well as helping others to become rich and even swell the coffers of charities. Pixelotto is a new idea which has its roots based in Million Dollar Homepage, with the website still selling advertising space. However, the difference here is that anyone who clicks on the adverts will be entered into a lottery, in which they can win $1 million.
The new site is set to be as big, if not bigger, than his first effort and the entrepreneurial spirit Mr Tew has shown has been a big inspiration to others. For example, singer Abigail Houldsworth, of Abigail’s Party, has told of her determination to get a first record deal after seeing what Mr Tew had achieved through his own inspiration. Following his example the singer raised funds for her debut album be selling advertising space on the CD. The two may have worked in completely different industries, but the determination and attitude of then student Mr Tew was used as a motivation for Abigail to get the finance together for her first album, according to I Like Music.
This just shows how important people like Mr Tew can be in putting themselves in the public eye through their hard work in getting a project off the ground. Mr Tew’s experience also shows that it does not always take large sums of money to set up a successful business - he launched the Million Dollar Homepage because he realised his student fees could bankrupt him.
