Small Firms Can Benefit From Blogs

Blogs are increasingly being seen as the way forward for aspiring small businesses and entrepreneurs - but recent research from Fasthosts suggests that many are yet to fully grasp the positive difference they can make.

Of some 2,000 small and medium enterprises questioned, only three per cent said that they are intending to start a blog on their websites - even though just under half said they would use one to increase sales and direct web traffic towards them.

The interactive, personal and often illuminating nature of blogs makes for a unique and exciting way of corresponding - or at least communicating - with the customer and solidifying relationships.

An incredible 75,000 new blogs are created in the UK every day - adding substantially to 53.9 million which are currently in existence. One of their most effective roles is as a means by which website content can constantly be refreshed and updated, meaning that the chances of snaring return visitors become much greater.

Expanding on this message, Fasthosts CEO Andrew Michael explained that blogs are a way in which smaller enterprises can innovatively steal a march on larger firms.

He said: “In today’s hyper-competitive market, blogs provide a fantastic way for small businesses to differentiate themselves through personalising their website and attracting more customers.

“The corporate blogs of large companies are bound by corporate guidelines and gate keepers, so for small businesses there is far greater opportunity for interesting comment and genuine dialogue with customers.”

His firm’s survey suggests, though, that while companies are aware of the possibilities presented by blogs they are yet to firmly act upon them.

Blogs are becoming popular among a range of industries, providing a kind of bridge between companies, their workers and the typical consumer. Countries such as China, with 34 million blogs, are fast catching up with others such as the UK and the US in this regard.
