The proposals will see the company’s workforce expand to 100,000 by 2017, and sales double to £12 billion in the same timeframe.

More Waitrose supermarkets - a subsidiary of the John Lewis Partnership - are also expected.

“Our aim is to grow the number of loyal customers we have, both by adding shops and expanding our direct capabilities,” said John Lewis development director Mark Price in the firm’s magazine.

The chain’s growth will impact upon stores including House of Frasier, while the move to increase the number of Waitrose sites will affect Marks & Spencer and Sainsbury’s, the two other main up market food-halls.

The news follows predictions of strong sales figures, which are due to be announced within the next two weeks.

It is already known that sales increased by ten per cent before Christmas, helped by strong demand for electrical and beauty products.

John Lewis is a public limited company, with the firm’s shares being held in a trust for employees.
